Years 3 and 4 medical students can enroll in a variety of electives. Course description, learning objectives, pre-requisites and availability are listed in Oasis, the medical school’s enrollment system. Searching the Oasis catalog requires a username and password.

Enrollment in these electives counts toward fulfilling the requirements of the MD degree.

Application Process

Faculty who are interested in creating a clinical elective for medical students in their clerkship or post-clerkship years must submit an application. The application is first reviewed by the Clerkship & Post-Clerkship Subcommittee and ultimately approved by the Medical Curriculum Committee.

If you are a faculty member who is considering creating an elective, please contact the Associate Dean for Medical Education, Dr. Sarita Warrier (Sarita_Warrier@brown.edu).

Away Rotations

Many students spend part of their elective time at another institution. Often this is part of the residency selection process. Students may wish to consult with their faculty advisor when selecting away electives. Students can participate in a maximum of three 4-week away rotations. Scheduling more than 12 weeks away requires permission from the Senior Associate Dean of Medical Education, Dr. Star Hampton (brittany_star_hampton@brown.edu).

Information about applying for away rotations can be found below.
