Years 3 and 4 medical students can enroll in a variety of electives. Course description, learning objectives, pre-requisites and availability are listed in Oasis, the medical school’s enrollment system. Searching the Oasis catalog requires a username and password.

Enrollment in these electives counts toward fulfilling the requirements of the MD degree.

Application Process

A faculty member who plans to offer a Years 3 and 4 Elective must complete an application and receive approval by the Medical Curriculum Committee (MCC). The Subcommittee on Years 3 and 4 initially reviews the application and recommends approval or revisions before consideration by the MCC.

Away Rotations

Many students spend part of their elective time at another institution. Often this is part of the residency selection process. Students may wish to consult with their faculty advisor when selecting away electives. Students can participate in a maximum of three 4-week away rotations. Scheduling more than 12 weeks away requires permission from the Senior Associate Dean of Medical Education, Dr. Star Hampton (brittany_star_hampton@brown.edu).
